Why All Food Is Refused for Australia

For the UK, Japan, Dubai, South Korea and India, labelled and sealed food is usually fine. Australia is different. Food can carry insects, seeds, moulds and plant or animal diseases that Australia does not have, so the Australian Department of Agriculture checks mail and courier parcels very closely.

Some food can technically be imported into Australia after inspection, but declared food is often held, opened, treated or destroyed, and undeclared food can lead to the whole parcel being seized. To keep your parcel moving and avoid losing the shipping cost, Pals Courier does not accept any food for Australia, labelled or not. That makes food the biggest group of prohibited items Nepal to Australia on our service. It includes:

  • Spices and masala, including timur, jimbu and momo masala
  • Achar of every kind, vegetarian or meat
  • Tea, coffee and herbal drinks
  • Snacks such as chiura, dalmoth, bhujia and biscuits
  • Sweets, mithai, chocolate and dry fruits
  • Noodles, rice, lentils, flour and any dry food

Tip: Nepali and Indian grocery shops in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide sell spices, achar and snacks that have already passed Australian checks. It is faster and safer for the receiver to buy food there.

Ghee, Meat, Dairy and Eggs

Animal products are among the most strictly controlled prohibited items Nepal to Australia. Ghee, butter, milk powder, cheese, eggs, sukuti, meat achar, dried fish and anything containing them cannot be sent. Even homemade sweets made with ghee or milk count as dairy products.

Seeds, Plants, Flowers and Soil

Seeds, live plants, cuttings, fresh fruit, vegetables, fresh or dried flowers, and soil are not accepted. Soil is a hidden risk: it often travels on the soles of used shoes, garden tools and sports equipment. Clean these items completely before you send from Nepal to Australia, or leave them out.

Puja and Festival Items

Many families want to send religious and festival items to Australia for Dashain, Tihar and other occasions. Some are fine, and some are prohibited items Nepal to Australia:

Usually fine

  • Metal statues and brass or copper puja plates
  • Clay diyas without oil or wicks
  • Thangka and printed religious pictures
  • Prayer flags made of cloth
  • Religious books

Not accepted or ask first

  • Akshata (rice for tika) and other grains
  • Jamara, flowers, tulsi and other plants
  • Rudraksha and seed malas (ask first)
  • Incense with plant material (ask first)
  • Ghee for diyas and oil lamps

Batteries and Electronics

Lithium batteries can overheat and catch fire in transport. Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, wireless earbuds, power banks, loose batteries and battery-powered toys cannot be sent on our Nepal to Australia courier service. X-ray scanners find batteries every time, and the whole box is held when one is found.

Plain items without batteries, such as a wall charger, a cable or a mixer grinder that plugs into the wall, can usually go. If the receiver needs a phone or laptop, it is faster and cheaper to buy one in Australia, where it also comes with a local warranty and the right plug.

Perfume and Flammable Items

Perfume, body spray, deodorant aerosols, nail polish, nail polish remover, lighters, matches, firecrackers and gas cylinders are flammable or dangerous goods. Even one small perfume bottle packed as a gift can stop an entire parcel.

Gold, Silver and Cash

Gold, silver, diamond and other precious jewellery, cash, coins and foreign currency cannot be sent by courier. Artificial jewellery without gold or silver is allowed and makes a good alternative gift.

Tobacco, Vapes, Drugs and Weapons

Australia controls tobacco and vapes very strictly, so cigarettes, khaini, gutkha, vapes and e-cigarettes are not accepted. Illegal drugs, weapons, knives, replica guns and decorative khukuri are also prohibited items Nepal to Australia. Counterfeit goods, such as copies of branded shoes, bags and watches, can be seized too.

Items Allowed with Conditions

These items are not prohibited items Nepal to Australia, but they need extra care:

  • Medicine: only with the original doctor's prescription, up to a 3-month supply. A medicine parcel up to 1 kg costs Rs. 4,500. Under the TGA personal importation scheme, prescription-only medicines also need a valid Australian prescription. Medicine that is not approved may be returned or destroyed.
  • Wooden crafts: must be clean, with no bark, holes or insects. Varnished or painted items are safest. They may be inspected or treated.
  • Bamboo and straw items: baskets, mats and hats must be clean and dry, and may be inspected.
  • Leather and feathers: clean leather goods are usually fine. Feather items may be checked.
  • Used shoes: must be completely clean, with no soil on the soles.
  • High-value items: declare the real value. Goods over AUD 1,000 need a formal import declaration.

What Happens If You Send a Prohibited Item?

If we find a prohibited item during our check, we remove it before dispatch and return it to you. If it is hidden and found later in Australia, the result is much worse:

  1. The whole parcel is held for biosecurity inspection, not just the one item.
  2. Delivery is delayed, sometimes by weeks.
  3. The item can be treated, re-exported or destroyed, and treatment can cost extra.
  4. You lose the shipping cost and may need to send the parcel again.

That is why we check every box before it leaves our office. An honest, food-free box is the fastest way to send from Nepal to Australia.

Common Mistakes During Festival Season

During Dashain and Tihar, the same prohibited items Nepal to Australia appear again and again in parcels: a packet of masala tucked into clothes, homemade sel roti, a bottle of ghee for puja, akshata rice, perfume as a gift, and shoes with dirt on the soles. Leave all of these out. Parcels take 7–14 days, so book at least two weeks before the festival day.

Sending to Students in Australia

Parents often send from Nepal to Australia to help students who have just arrived. The usual box has warm clothes, bedsheets, utensils, a pressure cooker and lots of homemade food. Leave the food out, clean all utensils, and send documents such as transcripts separately by DHL so they arrive in 4–7 days. Students can buy spices, achar and snacks from Nepali grocery shops near most universities.

What If a Parcel Is Held in Australia?

If a parcel is held for biosecurity or customs checks, most cases are cleared once the question is answered. Here is what to do:

  1. Send us the tracking number on WhatsApp. We check the status with our delivery partner and find out the reason.
  2. Ask the receiver to answer any notice from the Department of Agriculture or the delivery company quickly.
  3. Agree to removal or treatment of any restricted item so the rest of the parcel can continue.
  4. Share the item list and values if more detail is needed.

Australia vs Other Countries

The prohibited items Nepal to Australia list is longer than for any other route we serve. Labelled food, achar and spices are accepted for the UK, Japan, Dubai, South Korea and India, but not for Australia. Ghee is accepted for Dubai and Japan, but not for Australia or the UK. If you send to several countries, read our guides to prohibited items Nepal to India, allowed items Nepal to Japan and sending gifts abroad from Nepal.

Who Sets These Rules?

The prohibited items Nepal to Australia list comes from four sources. The Department of Agriculture sets biosecurity rules for food, plants, animal products and soil. The Australian Border Force controls customs, tobacco, weapons and high-value goods. The TGA sets the rules for medicine. Air transport safety rules ban batteries and flammable items. We follow all four, plus our delivery partners' own lists, so your parcel moves without trouble.
